Terms of use
What the service promises, what it does not promise, and what it expects of you. Using Ombra means accepting what follows.

This English version is provided for convenience. Ombra is published in France and governed by French law: in the event of any discrepancy, the French version prevails.
Purpose
These terms govern access to and use of the Ombra service, available at ombra.subalpine.it. They apply to every visitor, with or without an account.
What the service does
Ombra plans road trips that avoid motorways and tolls, and places stops along them according to the time you would like to pull over, the amenities you ask for and the shade estimated for the moment you pass through. Every stop comes with the reasons it was chosen and the places that were set aside.
The service is free. Coverage is limited to the region announced on the home page: outside that area, a request is refused rather than roughly calculated.
A route is not a driving instruction
Ombra prepares a trip, it does not guide you. You remain solely responsible for your driving. Routes are computed from map data that may be incomplete or out of date: a road may be closed, under repair, barred to your vehicle, or impassable depending on the season and the weather. Road signs and the highway code always take precedence over what the service suggests.
The times shown are estimates in free-flowing traffic. They account for neither congestion, nor weather conditions, nor your own pace.
Stops are suggestions, not guarantees
The places suggested, their amenities and their opening hours come from OpenStreetMap, a contributor-maintained database. A business shown as open may be closed, an amenity described may be gone, a rest area may be inaccessible. Ombra shows what the data says, not what it has seen.
Shade estimates are calculated, never measured. They rest on the position of the sun at the expected time and on the vegetation and buildings recorded around the place. Their reliability is shown with every stop, and a high value does not promise a table in the shade: it says conditions there are favourable.
No booking is made, and the publisher is not a party to any dealings you have with the establishments you meet along the way.
Account and sign-in
An account is created with an email address alone. There is no password: a six-digit code, single-use and short-lived, is sent to that address. You are responsible for access to your mailbox, which is the only way into your account.
The account only serves to find your past trips and your preferences again. You can delete it at any time from the app; deletion takes your trips and your preferences with it, and it is immediate.
Acceptable use
You undertake not to:
- query the service automatically or in bulk, to the point of degrading it for others;
- systematically extract its content in order to rebuild a competing database;
- attempt to reach another account’s data, or to work around the technical limits of the service;
- use an email address that is not yours, or have codes sent to third parties.
The publisher may suspend access for an account that breaks these rules, without notice where the running of the service is at stake.
Availability
The service is provided as is, with no guarantee of availability or continuity. It runs on a single machine and may be interrupted for maintenance, updates or failure. Map data is not refreshed continuously: a place may stay described in the database for months after it has changed.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, the publisher cannot be held liable for damage arising from use of the service, in particular a delay, a detour, a closed establishment, a stop that did not match what was announced, or an interruption of the service.
Nothing in these terms sets aside the publisher’s liability for gross negligence or wilful misconduct, nor the rights the law grants to consumers.
Intellectual property
The service, its interface and its texts belong to the publisher. Map data is licensed under the ODbL and remains the property of OpenStreetMap contributors; reusing it is subject to that licence. The plans, GPX files and calendars you export are yours, for your personal use.
Personal data
What is recorded, why, for how long and how to have it erased are described in the privacy policy. The service sells no data and sends no marketing messages.
Changes to these terms
These terms may change. The version in force is the one published on this page, with its date. A substantive change is announced on the home page, and continuing to use the service after that date means accepting it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by French law. In the event of a dispute, an amicable solution will be sought first: write to contact@subalpine.it. Failing that, the French courts have jurisdiction.
